Mute Swan at Burlington, Ontario

Here’s a portrait of one of the Mute Swans that winter at LaSalle Park here at Burlington, Ontario. We have several Mute and Trumpeter Swans year-round and do get Tundra Swans from time to time, although I have not seen any so far this year. These birds were introduced to this area some years ago and seem to be doing well, thanks to the pounds of corn they are fed daily. The Trumpeters are tagged and officially cared for. The Mute are not tagged, but do get to share the corn fed to the Trumpeters.

Such lovely birds with straight, stately necks and dazzling white feathers—I never tire of seeing and photographing them.

Swans at La Salle Park

Today I went out birding for the first time this winter. It was a beautiful crisp-cold sunny day just before noon. The light wasn’t great, but it was fun to have the D300 in hand again. I only took 32 photographs and they weren’t great—most had too much camera shake and the noon hour light was a bit strong. There were two “savers” though.

One of my favourite places for winter photographs in Burlington is LaSalle Park/marina, although we don’t seem to have the great variety of waterfowl we had at this time last year.

Here’s one of the Trumpeter Swans that winter at LaSalle Park. These are wild birds, which are tagged and fed year round.
